Portsmouth Information

Portsmouth is a in the state of Virginia, with a population of about 100,000 people. It is located in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.

The Norfolk Naval Shipyard (actually located in Portsmouth), is a historic and active U.S. Navy facility. The shipyard builds, remodels, and repairs all types of Navy's ships.

Since A large portion of the city is controlled by the U.S. Navy, Portsmouth has a radically limited tax base. By combining Navy facilities with schools, churches, and other tax-exempt entities, causes half of Portsmouth's assessed valuation to be taken off from tax rolls.

Virginia has funded millions of dollars in railroad and transportation improvements for The APM "MAERSK" marine terminal, which was designed for container ships.  It opened in 2007 in the West Norfolk section.
